Aircraft History Built by Grumman as model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Constructors Number A-11955. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-5 Hellcat bureau number 94203. In 1962 this Hellcat was owned by Nicholas Parks, Hayward, CA. In 1970 sold to Thomas W. Short, Harlingen, TX. Then purchased by Mike Rettke/Aerial Classics, Atlanta GA. On June 2, 1971 registered as N7865C. Restoration In 1973 acquired by the National Museum of Naval Aviation (NMNA). This Hellcat was restored to flying condition by Steve Picatti of Hayward, CA. First flight after restoration on May 4, 1989. Display This Hellcat is displayed at National Museum of Naval Aviation (NMNA). Painted in the markings of F6F "Minsi III" 70143 assigned to pilot Commander David McCampbell that he scored his eleventh to thirty-third and a half aerial victory claims between September 12, 1944 until November 14, 1944 (the last 23½ of his 34 kills) and became the U.S. Navy's highest scoring ace in World War II.
