Aircraft History
Built by Kawanishi Kokuki K. K. at Naruo. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 97 Large Flying Boat / H6K Mavis manufacture number unknown. This flying boat was either model H6K4 or H6K5.

Wartime History
Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known markings or tail code. This Mavis was sunk at its mooring off Matupit Seaplane Base off Matupit Island near Rabaul.

Wreckage
Sunken in shallow water and partially exposed depending on the tide. The wreckage includes the mid section of the fuselage, with the wings broken off to the sides. One engine is visible, and the tail is upside down behind the wreck. Reportedly, this wreckage is obscured by volcanic ash deposits from the 1994 eruption.
