Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi Kokuki K. K. at Naruo. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 97 Large Flying Boat / H6K Mavis manufacture number unknown. This flying boat was either model H6K4 or H6K5. Wartime History Assigned to Toko Kōkūtai (Toko Air Group). No known markings. Likely, this flying boat had a two digit tail number. Mission History On October 15, 1942 at 3:05am took off from Simpson Harbor off Rabaul on a patrol mission. During the mission, this Mavis reported it was under aerial attack and never returned and was listed as missing. In fact, shot down by two F4F Wildcats from Fighting Squadron 72 (VF-72) that claimed a flying boat shot down on October 16, 1942.
