Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi. At the factory, painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 2 Flying Boat / H8K2 Emily manufacture number unknown. Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known markings. Wartime History On August 17, 1942 this Emily was moored in Makin Lagoon (Butaritari Lagoon) off Makin Island (Butaritari). During the night, U.S. Marines landed by submarine and began the "Makin Raid". During the assault, this flying boat was one of two disabled by Boys Anti-Tank rifle fire by two U.S. Marines (USMC) from the 2nd Raider Battalion Sgt Buck Stidham and Sgt Walter Carroll that claimed two seaplanes destroyed by gun fire. Wreckage This Emily was sunk roughly a kilometer off the northwest end of King's wharf into Makin Lagoon off Makin Island. Its port wing is missing but it had the 20mm guns in the nose and tail.
