Background
During 1939, a demonstration of the German Bücker Bü 131 Jungmann (Young man) to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).
In August 1942, the Watanabe (later renamed Kyushu) gained Japanese manufacturing rights. Designated the Type 2 Primary Trainer Model 11 / K9W1 Momiji (Maple) for use as a primary trainer aircraft.
During 1943, Nippon Kokusai Koku manufactured a variant for the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) designated the Type 4 Primary Trainer / Ki-86 with production deliveries starting in 1944 to replace the Ki-17 Cedar. This aircraft was code named "Cypress" by the Allies.
Production
A total of approximately 1,376 were built. Kyushu built 339 K9W1 for the IJN. Nippon Kokusai Koku built 1,037 Ki-86 for the JAAF.
