Technical Information


Background
Designed and built by Tachikawa Hikōki Kabushiki Kaisha (Tachikawa Aircraft Company Limited) as a basic trainer. The first prototype flew in July 1935. Designated by the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Army Type 95-3 Basic Grade Trainer Model A / Ki-17. Allied code name Cedar.

Used as a primary trainer for Army Air Academy and flight training schools including the Rikugun Kōku Shikan Gakkō (Army Air Force Academy), Kumagaya Army Flying Training School, Mito Army Flying Training School, Tachiari Army Flying Training School, Utsonomiya Army Flying Training School. Also used by the Royal Thai Air Force in Thailand.

Production
A total of 560 were built between 1936–1943.
