Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi during late January 1942. True serial number 749. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 97 Heavy Bomber / Ki-21-II Sally manufacture number 4318. Wartime History Assigned to the 14th Sentai, 2nd Chutai. The tail had a stylized "4" motif painted in red with a thin outline in white, the marking of the the 14th Sentai, 2nd Chutai. Tail number 14. On July 13, 1943 this bomber was abandoned as unservicable at Lae Airfield likely due to damage or force landing. Wreckage On September 16, 1943 this bomber was captured by the Allies at Lae Airfield. The front section was destroyed or missing. The rear fuselage and tail were largely intact with the fuselage Hinomaru outlined in white. On the rear fuselage was a vertical white stripe. The tail had a stylized "4" motif. Afterwards, this bomber was investigated by U.S. intelligence that noted serial number 4318, date of assembly as middle January 1942 with a service life of 17.5 months and was mentioned in Report No. 68, "Life of Japanese Combat Airplanes," 20 March 1945. Afterwards, this aircraft was moved into a bone yard area with other Japanese wreckage and abandoned. Ultimate fate unknown, likely pieces were removed by Allied personnel as souvenirs or scrapped.
