Ray Fairfield 1967

Aircraft History
Built by 1st Army Air Arsenal, estimated assembly date March 1943. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 99 / Ki-51 Sonia. Unknown if this aircraft was a reconnaissance version or assault version.

Wartime History
Assigned to an unknown unit. No known markings. Possibly, this Sonia was assigned to 26th Hiko Sentai (26th Flying Regiment). This Sonia operated from Alexishafen Airfield. While parked, destroyed by an Allied bomb blast.

Wreckage
Until the late 1960s, remained at the edge of a bomb crater at Alexishafen Airfield. During the 1970s, Charles Darby noted the manufacture number as 2053. Sometime in the early 1970s this Sonia was likely scrapped. Ultimate fate unknown.

Charles Darby adds:
"[Ray Fairfield's photo shows] a Sonia hulk at [Alexishafen] bomber strip.  From memory it was 2053, but I won't be able to access my notes until I get back to NZ."
