Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kokutai (Air Group). No known markings or tail number. This N1K1 probably never was assigned to an operational unit and survived to the end of the Pacific War. In early September 1945 surrendered in Japan to American occupation forces. Postwar This N1K1 was one of four intact examples selected by U.S. forces for technical evaluation and collected at Kowa. Afterwards, one of 145 Japanese aircraft shipped to the United States and studied by the U.S. Navy (USN). The cockpit instruments were removed for testing. During the late 1940s, moved to NAS Norfolk where it was displayed or stored until 1972. While in storage, the engine, wings and tail stabilizers were removed and went missing or were scrapped. Storage During 1971, transfered from the U.S. Navy to the Smithsonian Institution and transported to the Silver Hill Facility and stored outdoors. In 1975 moved to indoor storage at the NASM Paul Garber Facility and remains in storage since. The fuselage is on a jig with dolly wheels. The engine, wings and tail stabilizers are removed. The N1K1 fuselage has NASM inventory number A19761114000. The NASM also has the plane's antenna, homing radio and parts, A19761114001, Homing Radio and Parts A19761114010 and the instrument panel (without instruments) A19600492000.
