IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Kawanishi. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as N1K2-J Model 21 Shiden-Kai (George) manufacture number unknown. Painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group) in Japan. In early September 1945 surrendered to American occupation forces in Japan. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References Thanks to JIm Long for additional information Jim Long adds: "This photo shows an N1K2-J, as can be seen by it low-placed wing. The N1K1-J had a wing at the mid position. Therefore, I believe that this photo is mislabeled by claiming that it is a picture of a George at Clark Field. I have never seen this picture before. Allied intelligence didn't have much data on the Shiden Kai. They had not been able to produce data pages on the Shiden Kai for their TAIC Manual No. 1. If Allied intelligence had captured a Shiden Kai in late January 1945 in such good condition as the plane in the picture appears to be, they would have been able to report the details of this plane in the intelligence summaries and manuals before the end of the war. They didn't. This means to me that the picture was not taken at Clark Field." Contribute
