Pilot 2nd Lt. Elwell A. Sanborn (KIA, BR) Upper Lake, CA Crashed June 10, 1932 Aircraft History Built by Boeing. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) as P-12 serial number ??-??? (two digits, three digits). Assigned to the 4th Composite Group (4th CG), 3rd Pursuit Squadron (3rd PS) at Clark Field. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On June 10, 1932 took off from Clark Field piloted by 2nd Lt. Elwell A. Sanborn armed with two 100 pound bombs on a training mission with two other planes. Flying in formation over Fort Stotsenburg at an altitude of 400', released a bomb that prematurely exploded and fragments hit the plane and ignited the fuel and cause it to crash killing the pilot on impact. Afterwards, an inquiry was ordered. Memorials Sanborn is buried at San Francisco National Cemetery at section OSA row 67 site 3. Sanborn Field (Legaspi Airfield) was named in his honor.
