On the left side of the nose is "PILOT - J.H. LANE" with four Japanese rising sun flags indicating aerial victory claims by 2nd Lt. John H. Lane. The first on December 31, 1942, the second and third January 8, 1943 (double victory) and March 3, 1943. Below is "CREW CHIEF" SGT. GRUMMAN". At the lower left is the U.S. Army Air Force serial number stencil with "P-38F-5-LO" and [Serial Number] 42-12644" visible. On the olive drab paint were marks from the cosmoline corrosion inhibitor used when the plane was shipped overseas.
