In fact, P-38G 43-2387 piloted by 1st Lt. Carl G. Planck, Jr. ditched off Induna Island (beyond the top edge of the map) and was rescued on February 5, 1944 by USS Gato (SS-212). The map indicates the Solomon Sea including the south coast of New Britain with Gasmata indicated. At the lower edge of the map is the north coast of New Guinea and offshore islands including Goodenough Island, Kiriwina Island and Woodlark Island.
