P-38J 44-23491 parked at Superior Airport
"Excitement Intense When P-38 Lands Here Thousands of Superiorites thronged to the Superior municipal airport to see Major Richard Ira Bong's silver P-38, after it landed at the airport Wednesday [June 7, 1944] evening. The shiny new plane made its stop in Superior after with only 17 hours flying time on its dials. Bong flew from Washington to Superior in four hours time. Youngsters were the first to crowd around in amazed admiration of the graceful ship. A police guard around the plane to prevent the excited mob from damaging any part of it."
