Caption from Flying Buccaneers page 71 (lower photo): "Lieutenant “Jump O’Neill stood this 9th Squadron P-38G On its nose at Dobodura after the landing gear failed on April 5, 1943. Elsie was Clay Tice’s plane, and when he got back from hospital after a bout of malaria, he picked out a new one. The 9th’s P-38s were the first fighter to use the vital forward base, operating from the bare ground in clouds of dust. (Army)"
