|
Aircraft History Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-400 Airacobra serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 36th Fighter Squadron (36th FS). Nose letter Q. Nicknamed "Air A Cutie" in capital letters on the left side of the cockpit with a large nude woman on each side fuselage spanning from the nose to the cockpit doors. The spinner, leading edge of the wing and tail were painted white. On the right side of the nose the female figure was nude laying outstretched with her arms forward and fingers near the propeller spinner with the nose letter "Q" on the nose above her rear and hands spanning the vertical white stripe with her feet on the cockpit door. On the left side of the nose was the same female figure laying on her back wearing goggles and boots spanning from behind the white stripe with the nose letter "Q" above her middle with her boots on left cockpit door with one boot tip beyond on the engine cowling. Her left hand was holding a cigarette. Later, the right side nose art was changed with the left hand over painted to be behind her head. During 1943, this Airacobra operated in New Guinea. Ultimate fate unknown, not lost in combat or an accident, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References Joe Baugher "Airacobra I for RAF, P-400" Gordon Birkett / ADF-Serials adds: "My bias is towards the aircraft P-39 "Air-A-Cutie" not the P-39D-1 41-28267 [sic serial number incorrect] often quoted, as I consider this as being in error." Thanks for Gordon Birkett / ADF-Serials for additional information Contribute
