Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Constructors Number 21548. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40K-10 Warhawk serial number 42-10164. Disassembled and shipped overseas to New Zealand as part of defense aid. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) as P-40E Kittyhawk serial number NZ3052. On January 30, 1943 reassembled by No. 1 Aircraft Depot (1 AD) at Hobsonville Airfield. On March 30, 1943 took off piloted by Flying Officer K. Morpeth on a ferry flight bound for Guadalcanal for assignment to No. 14 Squadron. During the flight, caught in bad weather, ran low on fuel and was one of four P-40s that force landed on a beach near Nouméa on New Caledonia. Later, salvaged and repaired and returned to service. During September 1944, assigned to No. 4. Operational Training Unit (4 OTU). No known nickname or nose art. On March 2, 1948 sold to J. Larsen from Rukuhia. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References USAF Serial Number Search Results - P-40E-1 Warhawk 42-10164 "10164 (MSN 21548) to New Zealand as NZ3052. Assembled by No.1 Aircraft Depot, Hobsonville and BoC at Hobsonville on 30 January 1943. To No.4 OTU, Ohakea by September 1944. Crashed during ferry flight to Guadalcanal on 30 March 1943 but later salvaged and returned to service. The aircraft was one of four that force landed on a beach near Noumea after being caught in a thunderstorm and running short of fuel. Sold to J. Larsen from Rukuhia on 02 March 1948."
