Pilot 1st Lt. John R. Casey, Jr., O-429757 (MIA / KIA) MIA February 25, 1943 MACR 16433 Aircraft History Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. At the factory, painted in a three-color camouflage scheme for delivery to the Royal Air Force (RAF) as P-400 Airacobra serial number AP267. Instead, delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) and retained RAF serial number AP267. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 35th Fighter Squadron (35th FS). No known nickname or nose art. This Airacobra operated from Milne Bay. During late February 1943, departs Milne Bay on a flight via Cooktown bound for Mareeba Airfield. Due to mechanical trouble, Lt Casey was unable to take off with his flight at remained at Cooktown Airfield. Mission History On February 25, 1943 at 11:45am took off from Cooktown Airfield on a flight bound for Mareeba Airfield. When this aircraft failed to arrive it was declared Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Casey was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
