Meyer, USNR Crashed November 6, 1951 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as P2V-3W Neptune bureau number 124283. Assigned to Patrol Squadron 6 (VP-6). Mission History On November 6, 1951 took off from NAS Atsugi at 5:27am on a mission with IFR tactical clearance. At 6:46am last voice contact with Niigata DF net control and reported being on course in its assigned sector. This plane was tracked on radar until 8:50am and the last position was approximately at Lat 42-20N Long 138-30E. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). In fact, this Neptune was intercepted by Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily (VSS) La-11 fighters and shot down over the Sea of Japan. Search A comprehensive search was conducted by aircraft from VP-6 and U.S. Air Force Search & Rescue planes. The last reported position area was systematically searched for three days logging a total of 119.3 hours. No floating debris or any other indication of what might have happened was found. Memorials The entire crew were officially declared dead the day of the mission. All are memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the Honolulu Memorial courts of the missing. All are also memorialized on the National Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.
