Pilot Suprun (KIA) Crashed May 21, 1939 Aircraft History Built by Polikarpov as R-5SH. Assigned to the Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily (VSS). Mission History On May 21, 1939 took off piloted by Suprun on a liaison mission for the 6th Mongolian Cavalry Division. Intercepted by Ki-27 from 24th Sentai, 2nd Chutai led by Captain Marimoto, who claimed the shot down of a "R-5". This aircraft and pilot was the first confirmed aircraft shot down and casualty of the Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident, verified by both Japanese and Russian records.
