Background
The S-43 Baby Clipper was designed by Sikorsky, first flight 1935 as a smaller version of the S-42 Clipper. This aircraft was capable of carrying 18-25 passengers or cargo. Two were purchased by private owners including Harold Vanderbilt and S-43 N440 by Howard Hughes.
OA-8 in U.S. Army Air Force Service
During 1937, five aircraft were acquired by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) designation OA-8 and used as transports.
JRS-1 in Navy and Marine Corps Service
Between 1937-1939, seventeen were purchased by the U.S. Navy (USN) with two going to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). In USN service designed the JRS-1.
