Aircraft History
Built by Douglas Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Constructors Number 2911. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SBD-5 Dauntless bureau number 10918.

Wartime History
Assigned to U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), Marine Air Group 11 (MAG-11), Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 236 (VMSB-236) "Black Panthers". No known nickname, nose art or squadron number.

Mission History
On July 17, 1943 took off from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal piloted by Captain Leonard Mailloux on a training flight to instrument flying and dive bombing. At about 10:30am, during a practice dive, this SBD crashed into the sea. Pilot Mailloux went down with the plane and went Missing In Action (MIA). Gunner Pfc Rosario Macone managed to bail out safely and returned to duty.

Memorials
Mailloux was declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 4.
