Pilot 1st Lt Robert G. Phillips, O-017149 (MIA / KIA) KS Gunner ? (MIA / KIA) Crashed November 10, 1943 Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Constructors Number 4585. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SBD-5 Dauntless bureau number 35946. Wartime History Assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). Assigned to an unknown squadron. No known nickname, nose art or markings. Mission History On November 10, 1943 took off from on Espiritu Santo piloted by 1st Lt Robert G. Phillips on a flight. When this aircraft failed to return the crew was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials The crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. As the flight was non-combat, the crew did not earn the Purple Heart, posthumously. Phillips is memorialized at Honolulu Cemetery (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 4. He also has a memorial marker at Yates Center Cemetery in Yates Center, KS at section 14, lot 17.
