Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Constructors Number unknown, four digits between 4561 to 5060. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as SBD-5 Dauntless bureau number 359??, the last two digits are unknown between 35922 to 35999). Squadron code "42-115" in white. Possibly, SBD-5 Dauntless 35954. Wartime History This SBD was either assigned to a U.S. Navy (USN) or U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) squadron. No known nickname, nose art or markings. Mission History This SBD crashed near Bonis Airfield on Bougainville. Wreckage In the early 1970s, pieces of wreckage with a SBD Dauntless Bureau Number were noted by Charles Darby at in a pile where they had been collected at Bonis Plantation, including the tail section and remains of the wings. Charles Darby adds: "The SBD-5 serial I read as BuNo 359(4?)? -- the last two being indecipherable. There was a 42 in small white figures below the 115 code. Wreckage consisted of the tail unit and remains of wings, which had red-outlined national markings."
