Pilot F/O William Torrens Hinds, RAFVR 129948 (survived) Crashed July 6, 1943 Aircraft History Built by Supermarine. Assigned Royal Air Force (RAF) serial number BR495. Disassembled and loaded aboard SS Eury as cargo and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History On October 18, 1942 assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). On October 21, 1942 reassembled by 1 Air Depot (1 AD). On November 9, 1942 assigned to 1 FW. On November 11, 1942 assigned to No. 54 Squadron. Mission History On July 6, 1943 took off from Darwin at 11:00am and the engine overheated due to oil pressure drop and glycol leak, forcing pilot to force land on the beach near Port Patterson. Fate of the Pilot Hinds survived the landing unhurt and returned to duty the next day. Later, he was killed piloting Spitfire EF588 (A58-153) on September 7, 1943. Wreckage On September 27, 1943 assigned to 7 Repair Salvage Unit (7 RSU). On October 10, 1943 assigned to 14 ARD. Afterwards, converted to conversion to components. During November 1943 this Spitfire was retroactively assigned a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) serial number A58-31.
