Aircraft History Built by Supermarine in the United Kingdom as model LF Mk. VIII (Low-Altitude Fighter) type 361. Delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) as Spitfire LF.VIII serial number JG690. Disassembled and shipped as cargo aboard SS Tee Park arriving in Australia on May 21, 1944. Wartime History On July 24, 1944 received by 2 Air Depot (2 AD). On September 13, 1944 received by 2 AP (2 Aircraft Park) and by the end of the month returned to 2 AD. On October 16, 1944 assigned to 14 Aircraft Repair Depot (14 ARD) to the reserve pool. On December 7. 1944 assigned to 9 RSU (9 Repair Salvage Unit). On December 10, 1944 assigned to No. 452 Squadron. Coded QY-T. On December 30, 1944 took off FLt L. S. Compton and was photographed in flight off Morotai. On April 12, 1945 took off piloted by WgCdr R. H. Gibbs on a strafing mission and damaged while strafing by 40mm anti-aircraft gunfire but managed to land safely. That same day assigned to 9 RSU for repairs. On June 15, 1945 returned to No. 452 Squadron. Mission History On July 17, 1945 took off piloted by FSgt Brian F. Gurney on a flight. While landing at Sepinggang Airfield on Borneo he misjudged the distance and touched down short of the threshold and crashed. Gurney escaped unharmed but the damaged Spitfire caught fire and was destroyed. Wreckage On July 19, 1945 recieved by 9 RSU. On August 9, 1945 converted to components.
