Aircraft History Built by Supermarine. Delivered in October 1942. Assigned Royal Air Force (RAF) serial number BS224. Disassembled and shipped overseas as cargo aboard the on SS Port Wyndan arriving in Australia on November 21, 1942. Wartime History Assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Spitfire Mark Vc serial number A58-88. On November 24, 1942 assigned to 1 Air Depot (1 AD). On December 6, 1942 assigned to 2 Operational Training Unit (2 OTU) and marked "4". On March 28, 1942 took off from Williamtown Airfield piloted by F/O R. J. Cowan and while landing ground looped and the left wheel to become stuck in sand. On February 27, 1943 assigned to No. 24 Squadron. On March 31, 1943 returned to 2 OTU. On April 10, 1943 to 2 Air Depot (2 AD). On June 13, 1944 back to 2 OTU. On June 22, 1944 piloted by F/Lt E.B. Tainton, 402009 suffered an engine failure during flight and force landed near Mildura. Afterwards, repaired and received by 8 OTU on November 1, 1944. Postwar On November 9 1945 assigned to 8 OTU. On November 26, 1945 this Spitfire was placed into storage. On May 22, 1946 this aircraft was authorized for write off and was stricken on November 15, 1948. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
