(three digits or four digits) likely 0271, 0273, 0275, 0290, 0291, 0300, 0313, 0320, 0339, 0346, 1514 or 1516 each assigned to Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2) aboard USS Lexington (CV-2) when sunk May 8, 1942. Wartime History Assigned to USS Lexington (CV-2), Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2). Squadron Code T-1 in white. No known nickname or nose art. Sinking History On May 8, 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea this Devastator was aboard USS Lexington (CV-2) when hit by Japanese torpedoes and bombs went down with the carrier when it sank. Wreckage This Devastator is sunk on the seafloor at a depth of approximately 6,637' / 2,023m near the shipwreck of the USS Lexington (CV-2). On March 5, 2018 this aircraft was documented by a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from R/V Petrel. The plane is nose down with the tail section broken off. Visible on the left side of the center section is T-3 in white. On the left wing is a well preserved U.S. Star insignia with a red dot.
