TBM Avenger 22904 piloted by Ensign Robert T. King with damage to the left wing and fuselage
The damage to the left wing and rear fuselage was caused when TBM Avenger 22889 piloted by Ensign Robert J. Cosbie was hit by anti-aircraft fire and struck this aircraft before crashing in flames into the sea off Chi Chi Jima in Japan. Fearing the plane would crash, pilot King ordered his crew to bail out while he attempted to maintain control of the aircraft. Both York and Dye bailed out over the target area and both were captured and became POW (POWs) and were later executed. Despite the damage, King managed to ditched into the sea near a destroyer and although he sustained sustained slight injuries was rescued.
