Aircraft History Built by Saunders-Roe in Cowes completed on May 20, 1943. Assigned to the Royal Navy (RN), Fleet Air Arm (FAA) as Walrus II serial number HD874. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History On September 14, 1943 received by Qantas and reassembled. Delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Walrus II and retained the RN serial number. On December 13, 1943 assigned to No. 2 Flying Boat Repair Depot (No. 2 FBRD). Next to 9 Squadron on December 17, 1943. During June 1944, damaged during a landing accident off Cairns. On July 18, 1944 to Qantas for repairs. On August 7, 1944 returned to 2 FBRD. On August 26, 1944 assigned to 8 Communications Unit (8 CU) and coded ZA-V for use as a target tow aircraft. On April 22, 1945 assigned to No. 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot (No. 1 FBRD) for overhaul then placed into storage. Postwar On October 30, 1947 made a flight to Antarctic. Nicknamed "Snow Goose". On December 21, 1947 during a storm, damaged beyond repair and abandoned on Heard Island. Wreckage On March 27, 1980 the hull was recovered by the RAAF and transported to the RAAF Museum at Point Cook. During 1993 restoration began and was completed in 2002 in yellow markings.
