Location Lat 34° 56' 56S Long 150° 32' 13E Nowra Airfield is located to the southwest of Nowra in New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. During 1942-1943 known as RAAF Nowra, Nowra Airfield or Nowra Aerodrome. During 1944-1947 known as HMS Nabbington, MONAB I, Royal Naval Air Station Nowra or RNAS Nowra. Since 1948 HMAS Albatross. Also known as Nowra Airport. Construction During September 1939, the decision was made to build a military airfield at this location. Wartime History Starting on May 7, 1942 the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) occupied the airfield known as RAAF Nowra or Nowra Airfield and included a RAAF torpedo school. Also used by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) and Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force (NEIAF). During the middle of 1942, several USAAF B-26 Marauder operated from the base to conduct aerial torpedo training including B-26 40-1403 and B-26 40-1488. On January 27, 1944 Beaufort A9-42 force landed with the landing gear retracted on the side of Norwa Airfield. During late October 1944, used by the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Air Arm (FAA) and the base was renamed HMAS Nabbington and used as a Mobile Naval Operating Air Base (MONAB). Also known as "MONAB I" or Royal Naval Air Station Nowra (RNAS Nowra). Postwar During March 1946, the Base reverted to RAAF control, "to be retained but not maintained." On July 3, 1947 the Commonwealth Defence Council approved the formation of a Fleet Air Arm which would be controlled and operated by the Royal Australia Navy (RAN) at this location. In 1948, renamed HMAS Albatross as the primary shore base for the Fleet Air Arm. Today Since 2011, four squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm operate from HMAS Albatross. Still in use today as a military airport with two runways. The first is oriented 21/03 measures 6,713' x 148' surfaced with asphalt. The second is oriented 26/08 measures 6,870' x 148' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: ICAO: YSNW / IATA: NOA.
