Location Lat 60°42′34″N Long 135°04′02″W Whitehorse Airfield is located at an elevation of 2,317' to the west of Whitehorse in Yukon Territory in Canada. During World War II known as RCAF Station Whitehorse. Today known as Whitehorse International Airport. Since 2008 renamed Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. Construction During the spring of 1920, a forested area known as Cyr's wood lot to the west of Whitehorse was cleared as a landing strip ahead of the arrival of the U. S. Army Black Wolf Squadron of four de Havilland DH-4s. During the middle 1920s, the landing strip was used by Treadwell Mining and Yukon Airways and Exploration Company. In the early 1940s, Canadian Pacific Air Lines operated scheduled passenger flights from Whitehorse Airfield. Wartime History During 1940 and 1941 expanded by the Department of Transport into a large airfield for military use. During 1942 transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Renamed RCAF Station Whitehorse and became part of the Northwest Staging Route between the United States and Alaska. Postwar During 1968, the military base was closed became Whitehorse Airport a civilian airport with commercial and charter flights and is used for aerial firefighting and by private bush pilots. In the early 1960s, Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) flew DC-4 and later DC-6B into Whitehorse as part of their flight from Seattle to Alaska. During the 1970s several Alaska based airlines also operated from Whitehorse. Today Still in use today as Whitehorse International Airport and is a port of entry. On December 15, 2008 the airport was renamed Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport in honour of longtime Yukon Member of Parliament Erik Nielsen. Whitehorse Airport has three runways. The first runway is oriented 19/01 measures 2,075' x 75' surfaced with asphalt. The second runway is oriented 31L/13R measures 9,488' x 150' surfaced with asphalt. The third runway oriented 31R/13L measures 4,000' x 80' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: ICAO: CYXY IATA: YXY.
