Location
Langar Seaplane Base was located on the north side of Langar Island off Pohnpei Island (Ponape) in Ponape State in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Construction
Built by the Japanese as a seaplane base with a concrete seaplane ramp and anchorage area.
Wartime History
Used by the Japanese during the war.
Today
Today, the ramp is used as a platform for breeding/raising clams. There is
still a massive concrete ramp about 100' wide and goes in from
the water right into the arched hanger about 150 yards away.
John Voss adds:
"As Ponape did not have any operational airfields post-war Langer Island was utilized for all air transportation to Ponape. While I was there a USN Civil Engineering team was also there surveying the island for an airfield. A jet runway was constructed Pohnpei Airfield (Langar) a few years later and Continental Air Lines began air service in the late 60's with 727's. I never did hear of a PBM wreck there although it is possible as the USN served the Island (as well as all of Micronesia) by VR-21 with their -5A Mariners. When the administration of Micronesia was turned over from the Navy to the Dept of the Interior (1950?) Transocean Airlines began the replacement service with PBY Catalinas. At another later point in time the contract was turned over to PanAm and they started flying the route with 'Provided' SA-16's (three) and a C-54 courtesy of the USAF via US Dept of the Interior. Note the striking similarity of the Albatross paint scheme to that of PanAm aircraft using the identical blue and white colors."
Dick Williams adds:
"When I was there in 1970-71, there was still an overgrown hanger
with remnants of a plane inside. Air Mike used Langar as their seaplane
base. A wonderful place to have a picnic and swim, using the concrete
seaplane dock to dive off of. I know, I did it!"
