Location Lat 12° 56' 60N Long 77° 40' 6E Bangalore Airfield is located at an elevation of 2,912' in Bangalore in Karnataka State in India. Initially known as HAL Airport. Still in use today as Bangalore International Airport. Construction Built by prewar by Hindustan Aircraft Limited (HAL) as an airfield next to India's first aircraft factory. Initially named HAL Airport. During January 1941 commenced flight operations and was used for flight testing of newly built planes. Wartime History Once completed, taken over by the British colonial government to use as a military base for Allied planes. Used for maintenance and as an airfield on the ferry route to the Asia-Pacific region. Postwar Remained in use for flight testing by Hindustan Aircraft Limited (HAL), renamed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Today Still in use today as Bangalore International Airport as a civilian airport. The single runway is oriented 27/09 measures 10,850' x 200' surfaced with asphalt. Airport code: ICAO: VOBG. Today, Bangalore Airport is the third busiest airport in India.
