Destroyed P-38 Lightning from the 8th Fighter Group, 35th Fighter Squadron after Japanese
air raid on Wakde

On June 6, 1944 during the night a Japanese air raid destroyed
six planes, and damaged eighty. Bob Rocker adds: "This was ace Richard "Dick" West's P-38 and the P-38 next to it the pilot was killed by the blast as he was sleeping in a hammock slung between the two booms and was killed by flying metal fragments. I'll get his name for you when I talk to Dick West Crew Chief Bill Wallisch as Dick West died about 6 months ago."
