Ernie Pyle Monument dedicated to Ernie Pyle on Ie Shima
The brass plaque reads: "At this spot the 77th Infantry Division lost a buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945". On April 18, 1945 he was killed by Japanese machine gun fire on Ie Shima. At the center is U.S. Army Brigadier General Edwin R. Randle, assistant commander of the 77th Infantry Division at the dedication of the monument at his grave.
