At the center right is Ie (Ie Town) and Iegusugu (Mount Gusuku, The Pinnacle) on the southern edge of Ie Shima are landing beaches "Green 1", "Red 1" and "Red 2" plus "Red 3" and "Red 4" that were designated but not used in the initial landing. On April 16, 1945 the U.S. Army 77th Division made an amphibious landing on southern Ie Shima. Landing at "Green 1" on the southwest beaches was 306th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion and 2nd Battalion and advanced inland and patrolling eastward to occupy Ie Shima Airfield. Meanwhile, landing at "Red 1" was the 305th Infantry Regiment (305th RCT), 3rd Battalion. Landing at "Red 2" was the 305th Infantry Regiment (305th RCT), 1st Battalion. These troops landed on the southern coast and advanced eastward to assault Ie (Ie Town). The beaches designated "Red 3" and "Red 4" to the south of Ie (Ie Town) were neglected as U.S. intelligence detected they were heavily defended. The last resistance on Iegusugu (Mount Gusuku, The Pinnacle) until the last defenders mounted a final banzai charge during the night of April 22-23, 1945 that was defeated.
