Location
Lat 3° 5' 0" N Long 13° 5' 0" E  Bintulu Airfield is located 5.5 km southwest of Bintulu, between a river at one end and the coast at the other end on northwestern Borneo in Sarawak State in Malaysia.

Construction
Built by the British during during early 1937.

Wartime History
Used by the Japanese as an emergency airfield during the war. Bombed by the USAAF during 1945.

Today
Reopen on September 1, 1955, with a grass surface runway catering for Rapid and Twin Pioneer aircraft operated by Borneo Airways Limited. In 1963, larger types of aircraft such as DC-3 were introduced. In 1966, the runway was resurfaced with bitumen and the terminal building was also extended to cater for increasing number of passenger.

On July 1, 1968, Malaysia-Singapore Airlines introduced scheduled Fokker 27 services into Bintulu. The terminal building and the parking apron was extended in 1981 to accommodate Fokker Friendship F50 aircraft.

In September 2005, first low cost airline in Malaysia, AirAsia started operating in Bintulu airport. Fax Air Services, subsidiary company for AirAsia has taken over major domestic routes linking Bintulu, started its operation on August 2006.
