Location Lat 22° 15' 30S Long 166° 28' 22E Magenta Airfield is located at an elevation of 10' above sea level two miles northeast of Nouméa in South Province (Province Sud) on New Caledonia. Prewar, this area was a race track. Still in use today as Magenta Airport (Nouméa Magenta Airport). Construction During 1942, built by the U.S. Army as a single runway nearer to Nouméa, while Tontouta Airfield was being completed. Postwar In 1965, the airfield was rebuilt and expanded. In the decades since the war, the suburbs of Nouméa have expanded to the former airfield area. D. J. Sassoon-Gubbay adds: "Marsden steel matting was used to support the hastily built runway over a swampy areas of Magenta Bay had in later years completely failed. Even the point loads of landing wheels of the aircraft then used would sink into the runway creating a danger for all landings and take offs. The Civil Engineering Construction Group, of which I was the Founder and CEO was the designated tenderer to reconstruct this airport and lengthen it . This was to make it suitable for commercial , and at the time, as a diversion airport. Same to be eventually used by the French Forces cargo aircrafts for the Atomic test of French Polynesia - all other airports then being unfriendly to France. The work was executed for the Ministry of Civil Aviation (Service de l'Infrastructure) based in New-Caledonia. The Construction Company was D.J. Gubbay & Co (NH) Pty. Ltd. based at Port-Vila, New-Hebrides (now Vanuatu)." Today Still in use today as Magenta Airport as a small civilian airport with a single runway oriented 35/17 measures 4,101' x 98' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: ICAO: NWWM IATA: GEA. Also known as Nouméa Magenta Airport. the airport is used by domestic flights. References Thanks to Richard Godin for this information Contribute
