Location Lat 04°34′ 35″S Long 81°15′ 14″W Talara Airfield was located east of Talara at 276'. Also known as "Talora". Wartime spelling "Talara". Also known as "Talara Field" or "Talara Airport". Construction Prewar airfield had two intersecting runways, the longest 3,200' x 164'. Supporting hangers and a radio mast were at the airfield. Used by Pan American-Grace Airways (Panagra) and the Peruvian Air Force. Wartime History Used by civilian aircraft during the war. On March 8, 1942 the first American forces arrive at Talara Airfield. Three P-40C Warhawks from the 16th Pursuit Group operated from the airfield during March 1942 to protect the oil refineries in the area. During the war, APO 817. Construction of barracks and other facilities began during August 1942. This airfield was briefly used, but was too short for safe B-17 or B-24 operations. The U.S. Army built Talara Army Airfield to the east. Used by the USAAF, 6th Air Force to defend the South American coastline and for communications. Today Still in use today as a joint military and civilian airport. Known as "Captain FAP Víctor Montes Arias Airport" also known as simply "Captain Montes". Airport code FAP.
