"My diary shows we skip bombed and strafed successfully the target: DODEN to APARRI on 5/21/1945. This may be the mission I recall a photo reporter being on board and taking a shot out of the cocpit and catching my profile. I think I saw this in a documentary after the war and thought I recognized my nose."

B-24s bomb Cagayan Valley including Aparri.

A-20s and fighter-bombers hit Cagayan Valley.

June 23, 1945
(U.S. Army) Seven Waco CG-4 gliders from the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division (11th Airborne), 188th Glider Infantry Regiment (188th GIR) land at Calamaniugan near the mouth of the Cagayan River without incident lands the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (511th PIR). This attack was the first (and only) time gliders were used in combat in the Pacific Theater. On the ground, the paratroopers linked up with a large force of Filipino guerrillas. Their combined force advanced southward until making contact with the U.S. Army 37th Division.

August 7, 1945
