Returning, the formation is attacked by roughly 30 A6M Zeros over Ballale. 70th FS pilot Cosgrove claimed a Zero and F4U piloted by Ken Walsh claimed two. In total, they the Allies claim 11 Zekes shot down. Lost is P-40F piloted by Smith and F4U Corsair.

Jensen strafing the target and claiming 24 aircraft burned, Japanese records indicate only five were burned and COMAIRSOLS claims only four. Lost is F4U Corsair 02577 pilot Lanphier who was taken POW, died May 15, 1944.

The bombing was not accurate with about half the load falling into the water off Bougainville 'killing many small fish'. Jumped by 10-15 Zeros, and fired on by accurate anti-aircraft guns at Kahili.
