(JAAF) 34 Ki-43-II Oscars from 248th Sentai equipped with a single drop tank, plus Ki-61 Tonys escort 9 Ki-48 Lily bombers, encountering bad weather on the flight to the target and only half the escorting fighters form up for the attack. Over Saidor, they failed to see any warships and instead would attack landing craft. Intercepted by P-40 Warhawks from 7th Fighter Squadron that attacked the Japanese formation, claiming two fighters shot down and two Ki-48 shot down, one ditching near shore and strafing the crew, plus one P-40 lost.
