Location Kakumabetsu Airfield was located on the north coast of Paramushir Island in the Kurile Islands (Chishima-Rettō). To the east was Mito Yama and Kakumabetsu Bay. To the north is Daigo Point (Daigo-saki). Nearby was the Kakumabetsu Cannery. Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. Between August 15, 1945 until December 26, 1991 part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, Soviet Union). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Construction The Japanese Army built a single runway measuring 3,800' x 150' for use as a military airfield. Wartime History Kakumabetsu Airfield was used by the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) fighters. During the later stages of the Pacific War, Ki-44 Tojo fighter aircraft operated from Kakumabetsu Airfield. Starting in early December 1944 targeted by U.S. bombers until March 1945.
