Skeletons of British Prisoners Of War (POWs) discovered by the Australian Army on Ballale Island
Caption: "The skeleton of an Allied soldier [British Prisoner Of War], recovered by the atrocities commission, laid out on a blanket prior to removal by a war graves registration unit. It is believed that between 300 and 800 Allied prisoners of war were killed by the Japanese after completing the airstrip [Ballale Airfield] which was the main enemy base in the Solomons area. Troops of 7 infantry battalion are now in the area."
