American missions against Vella Lavella

February 27, 1943
P-40s and P-38s join Navy aircraft in an attack on small vessels off Vella Lavella; hits are claimed on 2 vessels.

July 9, 1943
B-25's and several fighters sent against forces near Vella Lavella Island, fail to locate the target

July 15, 1943
A large enemy force, estimated at 27 bombers and 40-50 Zekes, is intercepted over Vella Lavella Island by USAAF and other Allied fighters, which claim 15 bombers and 30 Zekes destroyed, against 3 losses.

August 15, 1943
Fighters cover the American landings on the island near Barakoma. Allied airplanes knock down about 25 Japanese aircraft (7 by Army Air Forces fighters) attacking the landings.

August 19, 1943
B-25's, operating in pairs and with fighter escort, hit barges at Timbala Bay on Vella Lavella, Kakasa radio station on Gill Island,  and a beached vessel in Paraso Bay.

August 22, 1943
B-25's and US Navy dive bombers, escorted by fighter aircraft, bomb barge centers on the west coast of Vella Lavella.

August 31, 1943
P-40's, in a running battle over Vella Lavella, claim 5 Japanese airplanes shot down; other P-40's strafe barges in Timbala Bay on Vella Lavella.

October 31, 1943
(USN) F4U-2(N) Corsair piloted by Lt. H. D. O'Neil of VF(N)-75, operating from Munda, New Georgia, destroyed a Betty during a night attack off Vella Lavella, the first U.S. Navy (USN) kill by a radar-equipped night fighter of the Pacific Fleet. Major T. E. Hicks and Tech Sergeant Gleason from VMF(N)-531 provided ground-based fighter direction.

August 19-28, 1943
Japanese airplanes attack Allied forces in the Barakoma area of Vella Lavella  Island, losing a considerable number of aircraft (claims total about 50) to Allied fighters and ground fire without doing any great damage to the  Allies.

October 1, 1943
Seven D3A Val dive bombers of the 582nd Kokutai attack Vella Lavella, one was lost. They are escorted by seven A6M Zeros of the 204 Kokutai from Buin and twenty four A6M Zeros of the 201st Kokutai.

October 2, 1943
Six D3A Val dive bombers of the 582nd Kokutai attack Vella Lavella. They are escorted by four A6M Zeros of the 204 Kokutai.

USN: Naval Battle of Vella Lavella (Naval Battle off Horanui)

October 31, 1943
(IJN) G4M1 Betty during a night attack off Vella Lavella was intercepted and shot down by F4U-2(N) Corsair piloted by Lt. H. D. O'Neil of VF(N)-75.
