"The Pagoda" atop Pagoda Hill view eastward at Lunga Point Airfield (Henderson Field) on Guadalcanal
This early photograph taken circa August 7, 1942 shows the structure as built by the Japanese. Constructed using the trunks of coconut palm trees cut down during airfield construction and available materials. The Japanese structure had a smaller upper roof and larger lower roof supported by timber supports (without walls). Likely, this structure was to be used for airfield operations once completed. In the distance are rows of coconut palm trees in the Lever Brothers plantation at Lunga.
