Construction
During 1942, built by the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a military airfield.

Postwar
During 1946, The RAF withdrew from Sigiriya Airfield.

Today
During 1985, repaired and reopened for use by the Sri Lanka Air Force. Still in use today as Sigiriya Airport classified as a small airport with airport codes: IATA: GIU ICAO: VCCS. The single runway is oriented 22/04 measures 6,029' x 150' surfaced with asphalt.
