Location Lat 8° 32' 48S 125° 31' 29E Dili Airfield is located to the west of Dili in East Timor on Timor Island. Prewar and during World War II part of Portuguese Timor. Still in use today as Dili Airport renamed Presidente Nocolau Lobato International Airport in Dili Municipality in the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor). Construction Built prewar by the Portuguese as a civilian airfield with a single runway. Wartime History On February 20, 1942 an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) invasion force landed to the west and captured Dili Airfield by 11:00am. Afterwards, used by the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as a military airfield. Between June 1942 until August 1944 bombed by Allied aircraft. By the end of the Pacific War overgrown and disused but remained occupied by the Japanese until September 11, 1945 when the garrison at Dili officially surrendered. American missions against Dili June 30, 1942–August 17, 1944 Today Still in use today as Dili Airport. After the September 1999 election where the population of East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia, the pro-Indonesian militia launched a campaign of arson, murder and destruction in Dili. On September, 20, 1999 the first Australian troops were deployed to Dili as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) to bring peace to East Timor under by a United Nations mandate. Peacekeeping forces occupied the airport and used the area as a base. During May 2006 "Operation Astute" the airport was under the control of the Australian Defense Force (ADF). Upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft. Still in use today as "Presidente Nocolau Lobato International Airport" and used as a civilian airport.
