Location Lat 30°29′22″N Long 086°32′32″W Eglin Airfield is located approximately three miles southwest of Valparaiso, Florida in Okaloosa County, Florida. Also known as Eglin Field. Still in use today as Eglin Air Force Base (Eglin AFB). Wartime History During World War II, known as Eglin Field. Based the US Army Proving Grounds. At least three captured enemy aircraft were tested and displayed at Eglin Field. During early 1944, A6M3 Model 32 Zero (hybrid from several wrecks) was at Eglin until transfered to Wright Field. During 1943, A6M2 Model 21 Zero 3372 Tail V-172 arrived at Eglin. During 1945, A6M5 Model 52 Zero 4340 was at Eglin. Today Still in use today as Eglin Air Force Base (Eglin AFB) as a military airport with two runways. The first is oriented 19/01 measures 10,012' x 300' surfaced with asphalt. The second in oriented 30/12 measures 12,005' x 300' surfaced with asphalt. Airport codes: FAA: VPS ICAO: KVPS IATA: VPS. Today, Eglin AFB has the U.S. Air Force Test Center (AFTC) and is one of three product centers in the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). Serving as the focal point for all Air Force armaments, the AAC is the center responsible for the development, acquisition, testing, deployment and sustainment of all air-delivered weapons.
